Hawk and Squirrel

I remember watching a hawk carrying a squirrel high above a river bottom, giving him a ride, showing him around, one last look around, it seemed. I honestly don’t know if it was a dream or a real memory. Maybe I don’t know because I sometimes fly above myself and it is real.

An Orange Grove in California

Familiar territory. They surrounded my town. They offered sanctuary to me at various times in my life. Rough times; good times. I often ran “8 rows in.”

From there I could monitor the streets without being detected. I ran eight rows in and laid down in the soft, sweet soil. Bees buzzed. Birds flew. The world quieted and stilled to the sounds of the trees.

This was bad. I had to be careful with this one. I grabbed the cuffs and loped to the front door. I clamped one end of the cuffs to the inside doorknob. There was a knock. I swung the door open.

“Hi there!” I said. I grabbed the man’s right hand with mine and jerked him inside as I clapped the other end of the cuffs on his wrist. It was all an awkward, lurching dance. He was quite surprised when I slammed the door shut and he found himself in this position. He glared defiantly into my eyes.

“Fuck you!”

I felt shitty. I needed a shower.

There was this anti-bacterial soap that was ginger and lemon scented in the shower. I was a little reluctant to slap it onto my genitals. I’d had a very unpleasant experience with cologne one time.
