Desperation in pictures: Sunbathers help boat of migrants after they wash up on Canary Islands

Sunbathers in the Canary Islands came to the rescue of a boat of migrants who unexpectedly washed up on a beach.

Pictures showed sunseekers, who ranged from tourists visiting the island to locals, giving out water, food and clothes to men, women and children.

Red Cross officials said the migrants, who were from northern and sub-Saharan Africa, told them they spent six days navigating rough waters.

Jose Antonio Rodriguez, of the Red Cross, said: “They were the first ones to help out, giving them food, water and milk for the babies after they saw how hungry they were.

“They also gave clothing as the migrants were soaking wet.”

Most of the migrants did not require further medical treatment but one of the babies was taken to hospital with a fever.

There were two dozen people, among them three infants and one pregnant woman, who landed in a rickety boat on the rocky shores of the Aguila beach, Gran Canaria.
