Monsanto produces RoundUp, in addition to genetically engineered (GMO) seeds designed to withstand harmful herbicides and insecticides. Bayer manufactures neonicotinoid pesticides which have been implicated in bee die-offs, and GE crops which imply toxic pesticide use. This disastrous mega-merger would likely mean:

• Higher prices on food and reduced choices (think soylent green 🙂

• Raised prices for farmers, diminished seed options, increased pressure to buy/use toxic pesticides

• More bee- and butterfly-killing (neonicotinoid insecticides from Bayer)

• Even more Harm to small family farmers and sustainable agriculture

• Increased environmental contamination from the manufacturers of pesticides and crops genetically engineered to be used with more harmful pesticides

• Increased corn production which exacerbates nutrient runoff and the marine dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico

• Increased use of pesticides linked to brain cancer, adverse birth outcomes, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, low sperm count, Parkinson’s Disease, asthma, poor mental development, autism, reduced IQ, ADHD, respiratory diseases, bladder, colon and rectal cancer, and leukemia

So what do we get in return for their profits? Fewer options and higher costs. The Monsanto-Bayer merger would create a near-monopoly over our food and agriculture.
