What is an Ammonite?

Ammonites are an ancient group of marine animals in the class Cephalopoda, phylum Mollusca.

The spiral shaped shells that resembled tightly-coiled rams’ horns, produced fossils that often make it possible to link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods.

Ammonites’ closest living relatives are the octopus, squid, and cuttlefish.
